During the Oktoberfest' in Munich
the European Championship of the FUN class took place at lake Chiemsee
hosted by the Yacht Club Urfahrn. 25 boats from Germany, Austria, Italy
and France travelled to join that event. Italy arrived with 10 boats thus
they represented the largest nation in numbers.
After the German sailors had had the chance to
check the light wind conditions during a Match Race on the same type of
boat they took advantage the week after:
"Cosi FUN Tutte" from Lake Brombach won her first race at a
European Championship ahead of French Champion "FUN et Tic"
from Britanny. Cosi took the lead during the downwind leg and was able
to defend this until the finish.
In the second out of six races the Italians could
not sail up to their expectations. Olivier Roussey's "Obportus"
with professional tactician Christophe Clevenot aboard kept her head under
the light and unsteady conditions. They won that race ahead of last year's
second, Adriano Vitali, and Starboat-Guru Stefano Lillia, both from Lake
Como.
After this racing day there was another German boat placed in the top10:
"nix.wie.weg" of Jan Kramer from Oldenburg who sought Bavarian
tactical advice from Anne Schilling from Nuremberg.
The committee dared to start a race the next
day but it had to be abandoned due to a lack of wind. The same evening
the club organised a shuttle bus to the Oktoberfest. The sailors could
step from their boats and an hour later they found themselves in the middle
of the largest beer fest in the world. This extracurricular highlight
was especially delightful for the sailors from abroad - and probably one
reason for the number of boats being present.
The Wiesn' visit had hardly affected the
results of the follwing days. All boats were fresh at the line and three
races could be completed. "Sillage", European Champion 2001,
won the first race with incredible boat speed. They are quite used to
the light breeze as one can find it at their home spot lake Trasimeno.
Several more Italian boats finished in the top ranks.
In all three races varying and partly insufficient winds prevailed. Despite
that Adriano Vitali and Philippe Esnaults "Grifundoro" could
remain in the foremost positions. Most of the crews had to put up with
at least one really bad result hence the hope for a good overall position
was in vain.
Though nobody expected any wind on Suday another
race could be achieved. "Sillage" took an OCS so the gun was
shot for Adriano Vitali on "Furfunte" who won his first European
title vociferously. "Grifundoro" from Bellanon was second overall
followed by "Obportus".
They had a protest and were given redress as her helmsman Olivier Roussey
suffered severe damage to his fingers during a collision at the leeward
buoy. He was brought to hospital immediately and had to undergo a surgery.
It was his swansong in the FUN class because he is preparing for a single-handed
Transat which will be significantly delayed due to this incident.
"Cosi FUN Tutte" took a fourth place overall ahead of "Sillage".
That was the best result for the German crew in such a competition.
"Balduin" from Dr. Gressel from Salzburg took the honour of
being first Austrian boat at that championship.
