With 500 boats and 3800 sailors " Spi Ouest-France " in La-Trinité-sur-Mèr is the largest sailing event in France. The FUN one-design was on of the smallest classes with 24ft and a crew of four - the largest boats were about 50ft.
COSI FUN TUTTE (FUN), the Mumm30 TOPAS, and a J80 NEEDLES AND PINS (both from Kiel) came from Germany to join the event. The FUN-crew around Dr. Reinhard März from Nuremberg appeared some days earlier to check the venue and prepare after winter break. Besides preparation there was enough time to drop in the national sailing center in Quiberon and to have a look under which conditions top sailors and surfers do their training in France.

The first race started on Friday with a fresh breeze so most of the FUNs decided to use their jib. But in the fairly rough sea only the Genoa provided enough power. COSI FUN TUTTE was able to establish an early lead followed by OBPORTUS which was preserved till the finish. The second race was taken away by FUN-ET-TIC from Saint-Malo ahead of COSI FUN TUTTE und Olivier Roussey's OBPORTUS who won the series last year.
Sunday afternoon the 3rd race started in a 3 Bft. wind whereas on Saturday there had been too few wind and too much fog to start a race. After a inferior downwind COSI FUN TUTTE could to catch up and finished first. OBPORTUS was second, FUN-EN-BULLES thrid and RUAS fourth after they led for quite a time.

Wind turned and the smaller fleet got another gun to start an evening race after 6pm. Gilles Briend's DEFUNDER had enough power left to finish their best race in front of RUAS that had to do a 360° after touching the last weather mark because of unfavourable current - just 30 meters to go their lead was gone. FUN-ET-TIC was third and COSI FUN TUTTE had a brilliant starboard start but they had weed on their keel so they took a break and were temporarily 7th but went up to 4th shortly before the finish. Boats returned to the harbour at about 10pm and had to depart again the next morning at 7.30am. At this time COSI FUN TUTTE knew that they would have won if there were no more than one race the next day.

On Easter Monday there was a fresh breeze and the first starts had problems at the starting line due to current from behind thus there were several general recalls. Finally RUAS got their deserved gun and the won with a reasonable distance to FUN-ET-TIC und DEFUNDER. OBPORTUS was not very comfortable with their fourth as they could have climbed up the list to top 3 with one discard. COSI FUN TUTTE took it easy and finished 5th to abandon that race. There were no more races to sail so the German champion COSI FUN TUTTE won Spi Ouest-France with 1-2-1-4. Dr. Reinhard März from Nuremberg was on the helm, Tobi Hoh from Fürth as bowman, pitman Christian Winter from Gunzenhausen and Anka Hoh also from Fürth did tactics and runners.

For MORNING RAIN from Lorient it was the very first class race with their FUN and they performed well ranked 7th overall. At the price giving there were all these nice things like Champagne, Pastis and Algiclean and the illustrious balancing of one crewmember from the winner boat with oysters and white wine. There were 6 boxes of oysters and 5 boxes of wine immediately shared with the medallists and the Mumm30 friends got their box too. They had an outstanding 5th place in the most competitive Mumm30 class and the J80 from Kiel won in their fleet too.

The FUNs look forward to the upcoming events like the French Nationals in La Rochelle and the German Open at Lake Chiemsee in May
