The European Championships of the classes FUN and Joker took place under various conditions in Hyères, the venue of French sailing cream.
The notorious squall spot received 26 participants in the FUN class and 10 in the Joker class from Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany and France with a strong breeze at about 7 to 8 Beauforts on the training day - most of the crews skipped training…

On the first racing day there was surprisingly low winds from Northwest which could not spread steadily all over the Up&Donw-Course. After three races all boats were scrambled concerning results. Some boats were not Top10 as expected.

The planned 4 races on the following day could not be started in time: the wind oscillated for quite a time until some stability from Southwest. The shifts altered the geometry of the starting line causing severe position fights and a general recall. The Italian "Funta..rei" - European Champion in 2003 - endorsed their lead with two guns. In the third race of the day "Cosi FUN Tutte" touched them at the gate assuming to have right of way as they entered the circle without overlapping. ITA-611 saw ITA-58 overlap and in a protest hearing "Cosi" was disqualified and had to drop its fourth place. ITA-58 gained redress and got a first instead of a 13 place.

The last race on Sunday was rather result-cosmetics. In 25 knots Mistral air the FUNs were sent out early in the morning. The not even 300kg crew of "Cosi FUN Tutte" took the lead at the gate in front of "Piccola Peste". "Cosi" messed up her advantage choosing the left side on the second downwind but was happy indeed with her third position. Mario Salani secured his third overall winning the last flight. For Puthod a sixth rank was enough to win the title. Adriano Vitali had a very strong series and took the second place overall.
Olivier Roussey on "Obportus" with Christoph Clevenot as tactician ran up on place 4. The rest of the Top10 was filled up with Italians as expected. It is hard for French and German crews to break this phalanx.
The French "Defunder" (André Chaillous) showed a steady progress during the season and is now one of the Top10 boats in Europe. David Pouthè's "Ruas" performed strong during the races but was unlucky several times as her effort is not reflected in the results.
Massimo Canali's "Funnumero" one of the boats to claim the title gave up after their genoa halyard broke and due to below par results in the first races with unstable conditions.
"IX-Elles" of Philippe Burger improved during the race and placed on respectable 19th rank. The Austrians on "Bateau" were close behind and came up with a 15th in the strong breeze. The second German FUN with Leo Köckeis on the helm - the youngest helmsman in the fleet - departed on Saturday evening but shows potential as there is no boat lagging far behind.

The Jokers showed up with 10 boats. Not too bad because this construction is not built for choppy waves and heavy air. Peter Kehrer won on "Entusiasmo" from Switzerland. Respect to all crews especially during the last race with strong gusts. The participating boats know how to handle their vessels.
