The Campionato Italiano Classe FUN took place
at the coast in front of Punta Ala, where the former Italian America's
Cup campaign "Luna Rossa" was based. Bizarre Rockies facing
the yacht club and the Island of Elba is located on the other side of
the racing area. After measurement was done three full races could be
performed on the first day.
Match-Race-Ace Fabio Mazzoni dominated all flights ahead of European Champion
Mario Salani. In a decent sea breeze the only non-Italian boat "Cosi
FUN Tutte" took an eleventh and a ninth place. The goal of the Germans
was to finish in Top10, which usually appears quite eager in Italy. In
the third race wind increase to such a degree that bowmen had to switch
from genoa to jib.
The next morning an unusual wind was present
that was expected to turn left. Race 4 was started and the wind turned.
That scrambled the ranking a bit and "Piccola Peste" won ahead
of "Sillage" and "Cosi FUN Tutte" who anticipated
the shift. The race committee waited for the sea breeze to start and two
more races were done.
5 out of 21 boats were OCS that race which gave Mazzoni/Redaelli more
certainty to gain the title. In race 6 left side was favored and "Baffun"
from Lago di Trasimeno got a gun.
As there were seven races planned and Salani/Benedetti were 6th Marco
Redaelli had secured the Italian title in advance.
The last race was won by "Piccola Peste" followed by Massimo
Canali. "Baffun" took an OCS and dropped to rank 4. On 5th there
was "Sillage" with equal points to "Cosi FUN Tutte"
on rank 6.
